			<h5><strong><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Why Physical Literacy Matters</span></strong></h5>
<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Described as the collective influence that personal, task and environmental factors have on how we move, our <strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">Physical Literacy </span></strong>reflects the extent to which our movement behaviours shape our health, wellness and quality of life. It also underscores the importance of being physically fit, while highlighting the fact that possessing the fitness (e.g. aerobic capacity) to perform a particular activity may mean very little without also having the awareness, confidence or requisite mobility to move safely and effectively.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">For these reasons, when assessing a client’s physical needs their movement patterns must be assessed within the context of any relevant task demands.  Knowing whether the client is able to control motion of their knees, back and shoulders, for example, across a range of activities requiring varying degrees of physical fitness will shed light on their physical literacy and help to personalize any exercise, education or coaching recommendations.</span></p>
<h5><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">The Physical Literacy Screen<sup>TM</sup></span></h5>
<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">The Physical Literacy Screen<sup>TM</sup> comprises a series of 15 tasks that can be used separately or collectively to better understand <em>how</em> an individual moves while performing a series of general movement patterns. The 15 tasks are also separated into 3 categories each differing in the physical demands imposed.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">REPETITION</span> </strong>tasks impose a LOAD challenge (i.e. 15 repetitions per limb).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">WORK</span> </strong>tasks impose a TIME challenge (i.e. 30 seconds continuously).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">TEMPO</span> </strong>tasks impose a SPEED challenge (i.e. 10 repetitions in 15 seconds)</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">The Physical Literacy Screen can be used to categorize performers as being: A) physically literate (<strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">fitness and movement</span></strong>), B) physically fit (<strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">fitness only</span></strong>), and C) not physically fit (<strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">no fitness or movement</span></strong>).</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: 14px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;"><em>Literacy</em> is defined as “Being knowledgeable and capable within a particular subject area.” Dedicating a little time every day to our <strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">Physical Literacy </span></strong>will help to ensure that we have the motivation, confidence, knowledge and physical competence to maintain health, prevent disease, and redefine performance with work, life and play! Building on a client&#8217;s specific needs as identified with the Physical Literacy Screen, a physical literacy activity should be structured to:</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">CREATE</span> </strong>a fitness foundation. If physically unable to handle the demands of the Physical Literacy Screen because they lack fitness, a client&#8217;s experience, awareness, motivation, mobility, etc. may provide limited benefit.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: 14px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">CHALLENGE</span> </strong>control of key features. If unable to control specific movement patterns because they lack the awareness, coordination, etc., a client&#8217;s fitness may simply reflect the potential to perform safely and effectively in work, life or play.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: 14px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">CHANGE</span> </strong>the literacy demands. Having the awareness, motivation and ability (i.e. physical literacy) to move within a range of contexts will improve the odds of being healthy and active for life.</span></p>

			<h5><strong><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">Why Mobility Matters</span></strong></h5>
<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">On any given day, the way we walk, get of bed, put on our pants, etc. will be influenced by how much joint range of motion we have (passive) and access (active) through the coordinated contraction of our muscles. Possessing the motivation, knowledge and fitness to perform a specific physical activity may mean very little without the requisite mobility.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">For these reasons, mobility should be one of, if not the first piece of information gathered when assessing a client’s physical needs.  Knowing whether they have the ability (passively or actively) to place their body in specific positions will shed light on their available movement solutions and help to personalize any exercise, education or coaching recommendations.</span></p>
<h5><strong><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">The Mobility Screen<sup>TM</sup></span></strong></h5>
<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">The Mobility Screen comprises a series of 10 tasks that can be used collectively to ‘rule out’ the presence of an ankle dorsiflexion, hip flexion, or shoulder flexion mobility restriction.  The 10 tasks are separated into 3 categories (or grades) each differing in complexity and joint range of motion demands.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">GRADE 3</span></strong> tasks require a combination of ACTIVE ankle, hip and/or shoulder mobility.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">GRADE 2</span></strong> tasks require one of ACTIVE ankle, hip or shoulder mobility.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">GRADE 1</span></strong> tasks require one of PASSIVE ankle, hip or shoulder mobility.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">The Mobility Screen can be used to categorize performers as having: A) <strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">active and passive</span></strong> mobility, B) <strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">passive but not active</span></strong> mobility, and C) <strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">no active or passive</span></strong> mobility.</span></p>

			<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>Movement Hygiene</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">Hygiene is defined as &#8220;practices conducive to maintaining health and preventing disease&#8221;. Dedicating a little time every day to our <span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>Movement Hygiene</strong></span> (physical health) will maintain health, prevent disease, and redefine performance with work, life and play! Building on a client&#8217;s specific mobility needs identified with the Mobility Screen, a movement hygiene activity should be structured to:</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>INCREASE</strong> </span>their passive mobility. If physically unable to adopt specific body positions a client may not be able to take advantage of their experience, awareness, motivation, fitness, etc.<br />
</span><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>IMPROVE</strong></span> their active mobility. If unable to adopt specific body positions because they lack the awareness, coordination, etc. a client may not be able to take advantage of their experience, motivation, fitness, etc.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>INTEGRATE</strong> </span>their active mobility into relevant activities. Having the awareness, motivation and physical ability to move within a range of contexts = will improve the extent to which behaviors persist over time.</span></p>
